Sparkle IM Version 1.3.3 Released

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Hey everyone!

We’ve just released Sparkle IM version 1.3.3 in the AppStore today.

New features include:

  • In-app email of chat and IM logs (for iPhone OS 3.0 users only)
  • X,Y,Z support in the custom start location screen
  • Support for alternate chat channels using the “/#” command
  • Fixed some potential crashes for some users
  • “Japan” location added to the start locations

The “Japan” location in Second Life is for Sparkle users who want a common space to hang out in.  You can chat with other Sparkle users, or sometime catch some Genkii-ites on there as well.

Many of our added features come from user requests.  The best place to request new features is on our GetSatisfaction page.  We are happy to hear your input and feedback, so please keep it coming!

Genkii is very excited to have an article up now on Techcrunch about Sparkle IM, our first virtual world application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The article also goes into some detail about our upcoming developments in Sparkle.

We hope Sparkle IM will be of use to current Second Life and Opensim users and that everyone else is excited about the direction of Sparkle 3D! Check it out and let us know what you think.

Of Tokugawa Japan and Virtual Worlds

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

There’s an interesting paper by Dr. Eiko Ikegami and Dr. Piet Hut, both of Princeton, in The Journal of Virtual Worlds Research . Dr. Hut is also with MICA , one of Genkii’s partners.

The article examines artistic circles in Second Life via comparison to those existing in Tokugawa Japan . I very much support the argument that virtual worlds create something of a neutral, shared space that allows people to experiment in ways they might not normally do in their everyday lives, across society and geographical boundaries. What a fantastic opportunity for society as a whole.

From the article: "Such alternative spheres of sociability have been often coupled with people’s search for the possibility of creating a new social order built on the horizontal association of free individuals rather than on structures of vertical integration."

A very interesting and accessible read on a topic that I believe will get much more attention in the future.

Here’s the abstract for "Avatars Are For Real: Virtual Communities and Public Spheres," with a link to the full PDF download.

Virtual Worlds Conference and Expo in Tokyo

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

We had a good time chatting with old friends and meeting new ones today at the Virtual Worlds Conference and Expo at Tokyo Bigsight. It was fun to see Philip Rosedale mingling with Japanese Second Life users and fans.

After the Second Life user party, we trekked over to a great Showa era izakaya in Shinjuku for dinner and drinks with Ben Goertzel where we chatted about artificial intelligence and virtual worlds.

Later, we joined some people at BarTube, where Ben, Philip, Jun Doi, and dozens of virtual world geeks like us jammed, drank, and chatted about the future.

Next time you should join us!
